Going TOSA - Thermoelectric Coolers for Cooled TOSA Applications

The trends for small form factor and low power dissipation have made cooled TOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly) solutions very popular. RMT Ltd introduces a range of miniature high-efficient thermoelectric coolers for cooled TOSA applications. Different TEC types, designed specially for TO-can TOSA (5.6mm) and box-like TOSA MSA, are available in our standard product range. Here we specify our standard solutions for cooled TOSA applications.
The legacy “Butterfly” package with integrated TEC is a very typical solution for telecom market. TEC inside provides precise controlling of emitting wavelength by cooling or warming a LD chip. Although the next generation SFP or XFP optical transceiver modules require much smaller form factor and significantly less power consumption, the advantage of temperature controlling of LD is also required. TOSA package is a key component in Pluggable Optical Transceiver Modules. There are two TOSA package design types available - coaxial TOSA with max 5.6mm dia and so-called box-like TOSA package, that has been unified with dimensions and electrical parameters requirements by Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) in 2004 to establish compatible sources of 2.5Gb/s and 10Gbit/s TOSA.
Coaxial TOSA with max 5.6mm dia header is a legacy of typical DWDM-SFP un-cooled solutions. The cooled TOSA in coaxial package is very limited by space to integrate a thermoelectric cooler inside. Meanwhile with MD TEC Series conception developed by RMT Ltd company there are micro-TECs available, suitable for such applications.
Cooled TOSA XMD MSA agreement between leading optical and telecom component manufacturers standardizes box-like TOSA package by it’s dimensions and performance. TOSA XMD MSA package has box-like form factor with more space inside than coaxial TOSA. This provides more flexibility with thermoelectric cooler integration. Although XMD agreement fixes electrical power consumption requirements for thermoelectric cooler inside, there are different TEC types can be applied for TOSA MSA.
