Going more TOSA - new low-power consumption thermoelectric coolers for TOSA

Sep 8, 2010

RMT Ltd introduces a new line of miniature thermoelectric coolers designed specially as a low-current solution for cooled TOSA applications. This new product line supplements previously developed range of miniature 1MD04 thermoelectric coolers for the cooled TOSA MSA. Thermoelectric coolers of the new 1MD03 Series have the same dimensions but a revised inner design that reduces the operating current twice and keeps TEC height less than 1.0mm. The new thermoelectric coolers target high performance TOSA components for XFP and SFP+ transceivers with low power consumption requirements.

During recent years the demand for data traffic through telecom equipment has significantly increased. High bit-rate or WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) technologies have been introduced to the market to meet the demands. 10G, 40G, and 100G transceiver and transponder revenue forecast by Infonetics Research to grow to $1.44 billion worldwide by 2014, driven by 10G SFP+ and tunable XFP technology.

Pluggable optical transceiver modules of SFP, XFP and SFP+ types are the most required standards in telecom industry at the moment. Tunable XFPs are the major 10G growth opportunity. SFP+ MSA was established to realize larger capacity. The advantages of SFP+ are in the smallest size and the lowest power consumption.

TOSA is a key component in pluggable optical transceiver modules. XFP and SFP+ power consumption is directly connected with a cooled TOSA component. And the most effective way to reduce the power consumption is to reduce the current of the thermoelectric cooler inside TOSA. It has to consume less current in an operating mode, keeping the cooling performance at the extended ambient temperature range up to +85C. TEC Microsystems GmbH and RMT Ltd introduce the new line of miniature thermoelectric coolers designed specially as low-current solution for TOSA applications. The new thermoelectric coolers target both available standards for TOSA packaging - cost-effective TO-can TOSA and box-like MSA type.

The key advantage of the new 1MD03 thermoelectric coolers is their low-power consumption. At typical TOSA operating conditions these new thermoelectric coolers have the operating current less than 0.5A and total power consumption less than 1W.

Here is an example of 1MD03-004-04 thermoelectric cooler power consumption in the TOSA application with TO-can package. 1MD03-004-04 is the smallest one from 1MD03 Series. Its dimensions allow mounting on the standard TO-56 and TO-46 headers.

The new 1MD03 series consists of 11 different thermoelectric coolers with dimensions from 1.2x2.6mm2 up to 3.6x4.5mm2. Each thermoelectric cooler is available with two different height/performance versions. It provides an additional flexibility for TOSA design and power consumption. The 1MD03 thermoelectric coolers have wire bonding pads by default, which can be supplemented with wire bonding posts of different sizes, if required.
