NEW RMT TECS WITH INTEGRATED TOP CERAMICS

Apr 16, 2018

RMT is bringing highly expected and cost effective solution to support customer’s growing demand in thermoelectric cooling of complex sub-assemblies, in particular designed for temperature stabilization of lasers.

This new specific G-Bar technology can be applied to a wide range of application extending cooling efficiency and lifetime of TE cooling sub-assemblies.

RMT has developed new series of TECs suitable for applications in which TEC’s top ceramics is rigidly connected with materials, which coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) differs strongly from the CTE of TEC’s ceramics. Such materials include copper, nickel, aluminum and some other metals and alloys.

It is well known that during TEC’s operation it is necessary to ensure that CTE of TEC’s ceramics and materials attached to the TEC are close to each other. For example, it is strongly recommended to use for TEC’s placement special header materials as Kovar, CuW or CuMo. If copper, nickel or aluminum is used, TECs may fail due to the cracking of TE pellets as a result of unacceptably high thermomechanical stresses arising from CTE differences.

However, some applications require using on TEC’s top ceramics copper and other materials that have very high CTE factor. If these materials are rigidly connected with top ceramics (by soldering or epoxy gluing), there is a high risk of TEC’s failure.

One of the technical solutions for this case is to use RMT cycling TECs. Cycling TECs are characterized by durability to fast repeating temperature changes and have extremely high reliability. But manufacturing technology of such TECs is quite complex, which leads to a noticeable increase in the price.

RMT engineers have found alternative cost effective solution for the applications described above. New series of TECs having integrated top ceramics successfully passed the temperature cycling tests (-40/+85°C, 100 cycles) although copper/nickel plates were soldered to the TEC’s top ceramics.

New series of TECs (which have an additional letter G in the serial numbering system, for example 1ML06-029-09-G) is available for orders.
