Pump Lasers

Pump lasers for optical amplification are widely used in telecommunication systems doped fiber amplifiers (DFA), particularly, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA). They are also used for pumping of powered fiber lasers and others.

The power of pump lasers is large from few hundred milliwatts for telecommunication systems up to a few watts and more for others. The use of thermoelectric Peltier coolers (TECs) is often needed to provide thermal management.

The tasks of the thermoelectric cooler in such lasers are heat removal from laser chip, without which there is a risk of overheating the laser, shortening its service life or just failing. Also temperature control is important to stabilize laser operating parameters.

For these tasks in most cases single-stage TEC are used. A deep cooling is not required. Large cooling capacity is needed, as well as enough space for laser chip and its arrangement mounting onto TEC’s cold side.

Other devices as miniature as TECs and suitable for long operation life for pump lasers do not exist.

TECs possess unique reliability of several hundred thousand hours of continuous operation. It is more than 20-25 years of operation without maintenance and replacement, which is important for telecommunication systems.

RMT has specially developed and produced series of TEC for cooling of pump lasers.

All the products are manufactured in whole conformity with the standard of reliability Telcordia GR468 Core. The modules of RMT are fully compliant with RoHS и REACH requirements.

Depending on the laser package design, the company RMT offers a wide variety of standard sizes of TECs for such applications.

Butterfly

The Butterfly package is widely-used in telecommunication applications and pump lasers.

For the Butterfly style the company RMT produces several special series of single-stage TECs. The feature of these thermoelectric modules is an elongated shape. It is comfortable for the most useful location of TEC in a boxed Butterfly package and mounting of laser chip with optical and electronic elements on the TEC cold side.

  • Series 1ML06 and 1ML07 contain a set of standard sizes of miniature TECs suitable for Butterfly type package. These TECs are very common for Butterfly form factor and become de-facto standard during recent years.
  • RMT Series 1MDL06 miniature modules with up to 100% higher cooling capacity. Higher cooling capacity gives additional reserve in terms of temperature regulation from ambient, or in certain cases – reduces thermoelectric cooler electrical power consumption.

In addition, RMT offers the sub-assembly solutions – thermoelectric coolers mounted in standard Butterfly housing.

TO-Style

TO-Style packages with increased power of heat dissipations like TO-3 are used for powered pump lasers.

For such lasers RMT recommends using a wide range of standard TECs from 1MC04, 1MC06 Series. And some TEC modules with higher cooling power -  from series 1MD04 and 1MD06.

In addition, RMT offers complete solutions – thermoelectric cooling modules mounting in standard or customized TO-Style packages like TO3.

HHL-Type

Very powerful lasers are mounted in the package type HHL (High Heat Load). These lasers  power is typically up to several tens of Watts.

For such lasers RMT offers powerful TEC modules from the series 1MC06 and 1MC10. In addition single-stage types 1MD06 and 1MD10  are even more powerful modules. The most powerful modules provide maximum cooling capacity up to 50-60 Watts. It’s possible to install several TECs inside HHL package as well, that allows the summed max cooling capacity up to 100W.

In addition, RMT offers the sub-assembly solutions – thermoelectric coolers mounted in standard HHL packages.
