External Cooling of Laser Diodes
In many applications thermoelectric Peltier cooler (TEC) is incorporated inside the package of laser diodes. It provides miniature design and energy efficiency of thermal management.
At the same time there is a large number of uncooled laser diodes (LDs). Especially a lot of uncooled laser diodes are in the packages TO56, TO46, TO9, TO18.
In many applications of such LDs the efficient heat rejection from them is necessary to reduce operating temperatures. Deep cooling is not demanded, not to cause condensation on the optical window. By such thermal management, the stabilization of the operating parameters and longer lifetime are provided.
In the case, the external cooling is applied by active cool plates, laser mounts. In many systems the main element is the thermoelectric cooling module. It provides fine temperature stabilizing in a relatively wide temperature range and rejection of heat generated by the laser diode.
As in most of these cases lasers have TO-Style packages, there is a need for special laser fasteners to the cooling surface of the TEC.
